Lando Norris has warned that driver visibility could be an issue in Formula One this year. One issue that has gone unnoticed until now as the sport transitions from 13 to 18-inch tyres for the all-new 2022 regulations is that the larger wheels risk obscuring the drivers’ already limited view.

“The view is different,” McLaren’s Norris admits, “Starting with the larger wheels with these fairings. That could become a problem on circuits like Monaco or Singapore. We’ve seen this wheel size in Formula 2 and one of my friends said the boundaries of the circuit had to be shown in some places with cones because you couldn’t see that well anymore from the cockpit.”

“It will all need getting used to, especially as we only have three days total per driver of testing, which is not much if we have to get used to a completely different driving style,” the 22-year-old added.

Lando to stay at McLaren until 2025

McLaren has signed one of Formula One’s most promising young drivers, Lando Norris, to a multi-year contract extension that will keep him with the team until the end of 2025. On his way to a career-best sixth place in the drivers’ standings, the 22-year-old scored four podiums, earned his first pole position, and came agonisingly close to winning his first race in Russia.

Norris signed a long-term contract with McLaren on the eve of last year’s Monaco Grand Prix that would keep him at the team until 2022 and beyond, but after another successful year together, the two sides decided to extend the deal with a new four-year deal that will begin this year.

“The opportunity to extend our relationship with Lando reflects not only our commitment but our belief and confidence in his talent,” said McLaren Team Principal Andreas Seidl. “It is also a strong sign of trust and commitment from Lando in us as a team and our journey to World Championship contention.”

“Lando has shown impressive growth as a Formula 1 driver over the past four years and has been an instrumental part of the team’s momentum and performance trajectory,” Seidl added. “We are still on our journey to fight at the front and Lando is a key element of our plan, so to lock him into place, alongside Daniel [Ricciardo] and our senior leadership, gives us stability and continuity as we build towards our ultimate shared goal of World Championships.”
