It had been hoped and expected that the race's chapter would be closed at a meeting of the F1 Commission on Monday.

As the F1 governing body prepares to announce structural changes and an action plan in the wake of the Abu Dhabi controversy, Sebastian Vettel has called on the FIA to ensure clarity in each situation. Last season was marred by controversy, with the late safety car and last-lap championship battle between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen at the Yas Marina Circuit at the centre of an FIA investigation.

It had been hoped and expected that the race’s chapter would be closed at a meeting of the F1 Commission on Monday, which included F1, the teams, and the FIA. Instead, the FIA simply stated in a post-meeting statement that feedback on issues raised would be incorporated into president Mohammed Ben Sulayem’s analysis, which he will publicly present news of structural changes and an action plan in the coming days.

Speaking at last week’s launch of the Aston Martin AMR22, Vettel said, “Well, I am not a man of the past so not much point looking back too much but I think the main thing is that we focus on the sport and not so much on the show.”

“Last year, it was always going to be a great final, a great last race, there was one winner and one loser. Ideally, we had two winners but that is not how the sport is designed or any sport is designed. It wasn’t going to work.”

“Obviously, I was in the race and wondering why we were not released earlier to get the race started again but I guess there were rules. The main thing going forwards is there is clarity in each situation and no questions asked anymore,” the four-time world champion concluded.

Aston Martin’s 2022 challenger

Aston Martin has kept the launch season going with the unveiling of the AMR22, their new-look 2022 challenger. The Silverstone-based team, which is entering its second season back on the Formula One grid, unveiled the AMR22 in an online launch, the car they hope will inspire their return to the top of the standings. Due to the controversial close design ties with Mercedes, Aston Martin, formerly known as Racing Point, grew into a midfield leader, but aerodynamic changes for 2021 hurt both outfits, with Aston Martin, formerly known as Racing Point, dropping into the lower reaches of the midfield, eventually finishing P7 in the Constructors’ Championship.

Importantly, rather than a model, Aston Martin revealed the entire ARM22, and the sidepod design immediately stands out. Aston Martin chose a unique design for the sidepod box inlets, as well as a massive undercut. Formula One has made significant rule changes for 2022, with the cars switching to ground effect aerodynamics to make them easier to follow and, hopefully, create more overtaking opportunities.

These new rules also include stricter design parameters than before, in order to prevent the new cars’ goals from being defeated and to close the gap between the front and back of the grid.
