Everyone likes a good comeback story, and if it is about someone who holds a soft corner in most people’s hearts, that much better, Such was the feeling of Formula One fans around the globe when Haas announced Kevin Magnussen’s return to the team. The Danish racer used to be a part of Haas until the 2020 season. He and Romain Grosjean were then replaced by Nikita Mazepin and Mick Schumacher. It is almost poetic that the Dane would return to replace Mazepin whose contract was terminated a few days prior. There was a lot of speculation about Pietro Fittipaldi making his full-time F1 debut but Guenther Steiner decided to go with experience.

It was reported, at the time of Magnussen’s departure, that Steiner would have preferred to keep him and add Schumacher into the mix, but sponsorship money from Uralkali forced the Haas boss to pick Nikita Mazepin instead. Mazepin’s father, Dmitry, is the owner of Uralkali. Haas parted ways with both driver and sponsor earlier.

Straightforward decision: Steiner

Steiner said that he was delighted to welcome the 29-year-old back into the fold, stating that the Dane was key to their earlier successes. “I’m delighted to welcome Kevin Magnussen back to Haas F1 Team. When looking for a driver who could bring value to the team, not to mention a wealth of Formula 1 experience, Kevin was a straightforward decision for us,” he said.

“Kevin’s immediate availability means we can tap into him as a resource for pre-season testing alongside both Mick Schumacher and Pietro Fittipaldi. Pietro’s going to be first in this week with half a day’s running at the test on Thursday – that’s a great opportunity for him, with Mick and Kevin doing the rest ahead of the Bahrain Grand Prix.”

“Kevin was a key component in our previous successes – not least when we both scored our best finishes in Formula 1 back in 2018. He continued to show last year that he’s an elite race car driver adding wins and podiums to his resume. As a veteran presence in both the garage and the engineering room, he’ll provide a solid benchmark for us with the on-going development of the VF-22. We’re all looking forward to welcoming Kevin back this week in Bahrain,” the Haas boss added.
