The season has been filled with rumors about Lewis Hamilton’s future in the sport, but the Mercedes driver has been open about his desire to continue competing in Formula 1 through the 2019 season and beyond when speaking to the media ahead of the Mexico City Grand Prix. Following his close call on his first victory of the year in Austin, Hamilton was questioned about whether his improved performance had rekindled his desire to return to winning ways and what it might mean for the future of his Mercedes contract, which was set to expire at the conclusion of the 2019 season.

A Multi-Year Contract

The season has been filled with rumors about Lewis Hamilton’s future in the sport, but the Mercedes driver has been open about his desire to continue competing in Formula 1 through the 2019 season and beyond when speaking to the media ahead of the Mexico City Grand Prix.  Lewis Hamilton, talking about his days left in the sport said that he will continue to race for Mercedes for a few more years. “I believe the agreement will span several years. I don’t like the idea of retiring, and I don’t feel like I’m there, so there’s these things that keep coming up about me retiring,” he admitted. I want to be a part of the shift because “we have a lot more work to do as a team, as individuals within the team, and as a sport.” said the Briton.

Diversity in the Sport

The W Series was announced to be ending its season early, and Hamilton has been vocal about his desire to increase diversity within Formula 1. He has also been eager to add his voice to the support for initiatives that increase opportunities for women in the sport, believing that he can have a greater impact from within the sport than from the outside.

“I’m an ally to the sport and the work on the track and off the track. We’re talking about diversity, we’re getting more and more women into the sport, it’s not just about drivers,” he continued. “It’s about finding out what those barriers are to women getting into a lot of the jobs you see in the areas back here, engineers, mechanics and so on, and giving them a platform. So there’s more work to do.”

More Wins to Come

As Mercedes set out to pursue a first victory of the season here in Mexico City, Hamilton, ever the racer, concluded by saying that his other motivation for continuing in the sport was that “we have more winning to do.” Hamilton would have more chances to break the record and win a record-breaking eighth drivers’ world championship crown if his contract were extended into 2024 and beyond. He is currently tied with Michael Schumacher for the most championship victories with seven.
