The early-season issues Mercedes had controlling their W13 car were like driving with a “ghost,” according to Hamilton. Red Bull and Ferrari were ahead of Mercedes at the start of the year, but by the Spanish Grand Prix in May, Mercedes appeared to be gaining momentum. The team would, however, continue to have trouble competing for victories until eventually achieving its lone victory of the season, a one-two triumph in Brazil with George Russell. Barcelona was the first significant step; it served as our first indication that the car had more promise, according to Hamilton. It turned out to be somewhat of a false positive; the car performed well there, but the subsequent races were challenging. It appeared as though a ghost was haunting the car and constantly returning. “Everyone had an extremely difficult year. It has been difficult for me in ways I didn’t anticipate, but I am really appreciative of it. In terms of inner strength, I have felt more growth this year as a man than I have in many past years.

Audi are serious

Carlos Sainz Snr, an Audi Dakar racer, believes Andreas Seidl’s switch to Sauber demonstrates “how serious” the team is about dominating Formula 1. Seidl has been named the next CEO of Sauber, whose team will change its branding from Alfa Romeo to Audi in 2026. According to Sainz, who spoke to Speed Week, “Seidl is a guarantee for serious work and achievement; he succeeded with Porsche in Le Mans and he brought McLaren into shape.” Seidl has a strong network within the organisation, he brings a wealth of expertise to his new position, and he is German-speaking, so everything works out. I wasn’t surprised by his signing, and it made sense.

Van Amersfoort signs Smith

The MP Motorsport team has confirmed that Red Bull’s young driver Jonny Edgar would compete in the FIA Formula 3 championship next year. After two seasons with Carlin and Trident, Edgar will race in the elite F3 series in 2023 for his third season. Due to health issues, Edgar had to skip a few rounds of this year’s competition, but he still finished in 12th place overall. Additionally, GB3 driver Tommy Smith has been signed by Van Amersfoort to compete with them in the championship in 2023. Smith won one race at Spa-Francorchamps and was 19th overall in the GB3 standings in 2022.
