Formula One confirms pre-season testing dates in Spain, Bahrain

The first test will be held on February 22-25 at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on the outskirts of Barcelona.

Preseason testing will begin in Spain next month, followed by a session in Bahrain in early March, according to Formula One. The first test will be held on February 22-25 at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on the outskirts of Barcelona. The second test will take place in Bahrain from March 10 to 12 — just days before the season-opening race at the Bahrain International Circuit on March 20. F1 will introduce new rules to level the playing field, such as budget caps, and the 2022 cars will feature newly designed front and rear wings and 3D-shaped floors, as well as larger tyres from Pirelli of Italy.

Teams will switch from 13-inch tyres to an 18-inch model in 2021. Pirelli CEO Mario Isola is optimistic that this will result in less overheating, less degradation, allowing drivers to focus on racing rather than worrying about tyre wear. Max Verstappen of Red Bull won a thrilling title last year with a last-lap overtake of Mercedes’ seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton in the final race of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. In an era of total dominance, Mercedes had won the previous seven drivers’ and constructors’ championships.

Verstappen world champion

Max Verstappen of Red Bull won a thrilling title last year with a last-lap overtake of Mercedes’ seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton in the final race of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. In an era of total dominance, Mercedes had won the previous seven drivers’ and constructors’ championships.

Verstappen did start the race on pole but Hamilton got a better start when the five lights went out. However, on the very first lap, it seemed like the Dutchman would pass Hamilton, but the latter strayed off track to keep his advantage. The FIA ruled that no investigation would be necessary as they felt that Verstappen had left no space for Hamilton. Race director Michael Massey confirmed later on that Hamilton was asked to reduce his speed and reduce some of the advantage he might have gained.

Hamilton led for the majority of the race but Williams driver Nicholas Latifi crashed during lap 54 of 58. It resulted in a safety car that was on track till lap 57. When the green flags were finally waved, the title protagonists raced wheel to wheel and the Dutchman ended up gaining the advantage. Hamilton tried his absolute best to win the position back but it was Verstappen’s defence in the end that won him his maiden title. Mercedes, however, bagged the constructor’s championship for the eighth season in a row while Sebastian Vettel finished the season with the most overtakes.
