Ferrari has unveiled the car it hopes will help it return to the front of the Formula One grid in 2022 as a championship contender. The new F1-75 retains the team’s iconic red colours, but features black front and rear wings, harkening back to the 1990s. On the design front, the team appears to have used sidepod louvres similar to those that caused a stir at Aston Martin’s launch and drew comparisons to cheese graters and shark gills on social media.

Ferrari boss Mattia Binotto said during the launch that the team had taken a “innovative” approach to this year’s rule changes. Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, who are teammates for the second season, form one of F1’s strongest driver lineups. Leclerc joined in 2019, the same year he won his three Formula One titles, while Sainz took over for Sebastian Vettel last season.

Since 2007, no Ferrari driver has won the drivers’ championship, and the team hasn’t won the constructors’ championship since 2008. However, the famous Italian team’s return to the front of the grid has been sparked by this season’s aerodynamic rule change. Although Mercedes and Red Bull are likely to remain the teams to beat early on, F1 hopes that its new rule change will effectively reset the competitive order and create closer racing. The big question will be whether Ferrari and McLaren can close the gap between themselves and the midfield over the course of the season.

Ferrari struggled in 2020 and 2021 after two failed championship challenges in 2018 and 2019. One potentially positive consequence of this was that the team was able to focus solely on 2022 much sooner than Mercedes and Red Bull, who were locked in a championship battle until the final lap of last season’s championship.

Fittipaldi backs Ferrari

Emerson Fittipaldi, a two-time Formula One world champion, believes Ferrari will have an advantage over Mercedes and Red Bull at the start of the 2022 season. As a ground effect-led aerodynamic concept is embraced, sweeping technical regulations have come into effect this year. In addition, the tyres will be increased to 18 inches, and the engines will produce 20 fewer horsepower than they did in 2021.

“They can be faster at the start,” he told the Dutch edition of Motorsport.com. “A team like Ferrari has been working on the new season for much longer. You don’t know, there can be many surprises.”
