Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz is close to signing a new contract with the Scuderia, as per team principal Mattia Binotto. The Spaniard delivered a stunning performance in the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix on Sunday to finish P2. Sainz has been consistent throughout his time at Ferrari. 2021 was the first season with the team for the Spaniard and he ended up in fifth place in the driver’s championship. A reliable driver, Sainz is someone who can go get the job done when the time comes and is certainly a highly crucial part of the team from Italy.

“I think we found an agreement,” team boss Mattia Binotto said Sunday as per ESPN. “It’s only a matter to translate it into paper.” When the driver himself was asked about a new contract extension, Sainz said, “I think we are close. Very close. Very, very close. Very close. Extremely close. Nearly there.”

A fine weekend for Sainz

The Spaniard qualified in third place ahead of the Bahrain GP and managed to finish in second place in the race. It was a 1-2 for the Scuderia, their first since 2019. “In FP1, FP2 and FP3 [the practice sessions] I was very far behind, the most far that I’ve been ever in Ferrari and that’s why even with a one-two that we scored I’m not entirely happy with the weekend,” Sainz said on Sunday.

“As a Ferrari driver it’s been my most difficult weekend and it just shows that I need to put my head down, understand this car, understand where is Charles making the difference with his driving. I need to improve if I want to fight for a win and I will put my head down and try to do some steps coming into Jeddah. Can I improve it from one weekend to another? I think I can improve it.”

Ferrari enjoyed a dream start to the 2022 Formula One season as they recorded a 1-2 finish at the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix on Sunday. Charles Leclerc finished in first place after getting pole position in qualifying. Teammate Carlos Sainz had a bit of luck on his side but he also had an excellent drive finishing P2 for the Scuderia. The surprise on the podium was seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton in third place. Mercedes have had to deal with a slew of problems since pre-season testing and nobody expected them to finish on the podium. However, failures of both Red Bull cars saw the silver arrows finishing third and fourth to round off a good day of racing.
