The official launch date for Alfa Romeo’s C42 Formula One car, which will be driven by ex-Mercedes racer Valtteri Bottas and Chinese rookie Zhou Guanyu in 2022, has been announced. Alfa Romeo will run their C42 at Catalunya – albeit in a special testing livery – despite the fact that the launch date of February 27 is after the Barcelona pre-season shakedown (February 23-25). A few days later, their official 2022 race livery will be revealed in the digital event.

The team, which is based in Switzerland at Sauber’s Hinwil headquarters, has also changed its official name from Alfa Romeo Racing to Alfa Romeo F1 Team for 2022, as the marque enters a new era in Formula One.

CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato explained the name change: “For us, adding the wording ‘F1 Team’ to our team’s name is highly significant and makes us proud: it epitomises Alfa Romeo’s commitment to the most exclusive motorsport competition there is, where this brand has written indelible pages in its history.

“On the other hand, it represents the team spirit of cohesion, in which Alfa Romeo intends to play a leading role. With this new team and logo, a new, exciting line-up and a new car ready to be unveiled, we are ready for an exciting new season.”

No Ferrari gearbox

The new car will be powered by Ferrari once again, with Alfa Romeo continuing their partnership, but it will lack Ferrari’s gearbox and rear suspension. According to Motorsport.com in Italy, the Hinwil team decided to build their own gearbox and rear suspension, aiming for a different construction philosophy than the one used in Maranello. The C42 will also have a different wheelbase than the Ferrari, which is said to be shorter, as well as a different tie rod for the rear suspension.

Alfa Romeo is reportedly seeking to sever ties with Ferrari in order to reclaim its status as a true manufacturer, as it will no longer accept the gearbox or rear suspension from the supermarket in Maranello, only the power unit.
