On May 16, Blizzard published a 2023 roadmap for Overwatch 2, outlining upcoming activities and game features while also appearing to tease information about the game’s support hero. The game’s next hero, scheduled to debut at the beginning of season six, was already confirmed by the developers to be a support hero to fill the role’s lack of representation. Fans soon realized, however, that the picture Blizzard used as a background for the words “New Support Hero” was uncannily similar to another image.

The poster is one of the spawn rooms of the map Antarctic Peninsula and has a large label on it indicating that it is an image of Peru, and the picture of a cloudy, mountainous region appears to be an exact replica of that label. Naturally, this has led a lot of players to speculate that the upcoming Overwatch 2 support hero, who will probably release in August, might be connected to the nation. It wouldn’t be surprising to see another country added to the list since Overwatch has a roster that is almost as diverse as its heroes.

The image’s apparent resemblance to Machu Picchu, a well-known citadel of the Inca Empire, has also drawn immediate attention from fans. While that can’t be confirmed, one player brought up a Blizzard article from 2015 that featured a pin on the city of Arequipa, indicating that this new hero may be found in a different location in Peru.

These sorts of missions would either focus on the overarching plot of Overwatch 2 in the same way that Uprising, Retribution, and Storm Rising dove into the events of the original Overwatch, or they would be fantastical side stories that are not part of the official Overwatch canon, like the Halloween event Junkenstein’s Revenge. Additionally, these story missions would change every few months and be seasonal.

It’s challenging to extrapolate too much more from the impression of Peru that Blizzard subtly attempted to present to us.

You need to look no further than the game’s most recent addition, Lifeweaver, for proof that the developers continue to find a way to consistently keep us on the edge when it comes to new hero releases. The only way to truly know who is coming next will be to patiently wait for the hero announcement since there are many characters in the Overwatch lore who aren’t in the game. Blizzard still finds a way to surprise us occasionally.
