One of the most comprehensive champion rosters in contemporary gaming—or in any gaming franchise, really—belongs to League of Legends, and it includes everything from the most approachable characters to the real demons who, in the right hands, completely dominate Summoner’s Rift games.

They are, of course, not for the timid; it will take you dozens of failures and hundreds of games to become proficient with these strong picks. Here are the League of Legends champions that are the hardest to truly master, from one-half of the iconic sword brothers to the most mechanically demanding junglers, in addition to numerous special ADCs.

5. Aphelios

Although the list is arranged alphabetically, I would have ranked Aphelios first regardless of the list’s order because this gun-toting AD carry is undoubtedly one of Riot’s most complicated League of Legends champions.

These are his five weapons:

  • Calibrum (Rifle): A long-range attack that marks enemies
  • Severum (Scythe Pistol): Boosts speed and dishes out two attacks
  • Gravitum (Cannon): Roots and slows enemies
  • Infernum (Flamethrower): Blasts enemies in a cone
  • Crescendum (Chakram): Deploys a sentry

Green, Red, Purple, Blue, and White are the only options left. It’s one of the most difficult characters to control in real-time during any team fight because you have to cycle through them during engagements. I just make sure I ban Aphelios now because I’ve frequently tripped up and forgotten to get the proper gun in a crucial situation.

4. Kalista

Due to her gaming style in League of Legends, which is a touch different from most others in her role, Kalista is one of the most challenging characters to learn. While most AD carriers—including myself—play the role of sticking to strong, largely interchangeable champions, Kalista offers up a special, kiting-heavy auto-attack style. If you are unable to kite, which is a fairly common mechanic these days, Kalista will appear to be incredibly difficult; however, if you do, you will be able to master both Kalista and bot lane simultaneously.

3. Nidalee

Nidalee is loaded with challenging mechanics, making the Bestial Huntress one of the most challenging League champions to play, let alone master. In order to maximize her dual roles as a human and cougar, which both have seven skills, players must learn how to use her recognizable Javelin Toss move and also learn how to navigate the jungle. She’s an early-game character, so if you struggle with pathing, ganking, and balancing her forms between those two jungle roles, she could rapidly lose her usefulness in late-game battles.

2. Riven

Riven’s gameplay revolves around combos, hence she merits a spot on our list of ranks. I’ve participated in enough fights where a less skilled Riven tries to pull off her knock-ups and playmaking just to fail miserably. The “main character” Riven, who carries the entire fight by himself, is on the opposing side and I believe we’ve all been on the receiving end of his antics.

1. Yasuo

One side of the famous Sword brothers is last but by no means least in League of Legends. Is playing Yasuo challenging? Let’s just ask a guy who lost to him in rated and then abandoned the game after scoring 0/10/0 on him. It answers the issue succinctly—yes, Yasuo is challenging to master—and I believe every League player has a tale like that. In fact, there’s a reason it’s become a meme in the community.

Even if he’s not impossible, the sword brother who has been on the team the longest is essentially the model for learning challenging roles. It’s only the beginning of a very long road when one masters one’s Steel Tempest, Wind Wall, and Last Breath.
