“That show-off spirit has always been a part of the franchise,” said Pokémon Go senior product manager Alex Moffit. “We’re pretty light on leader boarding and explicit competition in the game, and that’s deliberate. We know that’s happening outside of the game amongst friend groups, everybody’s finding creative ways to compete. So we thought, what if we bring a little bit of that spirit into the game itself.”
Nearly seven years after its initial release, the developers are aware that the “heart and soul” of Pokémon Go is the pursuit of various Pokémon. Friend and player comparisons of their fresh catches, whether online or after an outing, go hand in hand with this.
These showcases will take place at specific PokéStops, and Niantic will use them to encourage friendly competition and highlight a few particular Pokémon. The focus of each Showcase will be a specific Pokémon, though there may be more than one going on at once.
