Maomao suggests a high-stakes wager to Lakan in episode 23 of The Apothecary Diaries, and the two begin a string of chess battles. Upon the expiration of her contract, Maomao has agreed to leave the palace and reside with Lakan if he wins. If Maomao wins, though, Lakan will have no choice but to buy a courtesan from the Verdigris House.
The plot thickens when Maomao, behind everyone’s back, mixes booze with what seems like a toxic chemical and puts it into cups. According to the rules, whomever loses a match has to drink from the cup that the winner chooses.
Lakan loses the third match on purpose so Maomao doesn’t have to drink the dangerous potion, even though he wins the first two.
Unexpectedly, Lakan passes out shortly after, exposing his limited tolerance for alcohol—something Maomao had already mentioned. Since the “medicine” supplied to the alcohol was just a combination of sugar and salt to make it more potent, Gaoshun verifies that Lakan’s condition is caused by drunkenness instead of poisoning.
