Crunchyroll Unveils English Dub Trailer for Makoto Shinkai’s “Suzume” Film Ahead of North American Release

Ahead of its highly anticipated North American release on April 14, Crunchyroll has released an English dub trailer for Makoto Shinkai’s latest film, “Suzume” (Suzume no Tojimari). The film has already garnered significant attention in Japan, where it opened at #1 and earned 1.88 billion yen (about US$13.49 million) in its first three days.

Cast and Crew

The English dub cast features Nichole Sakura as Suzume, Josh Keaton as Sо̄ta Munakata, Jennifer Sun Bell as Tamaki Iwato, Joe Zieja as Tomoya Serizawa, Lena Josephien Marano as Daijin, Bennet Hetrick as Young Suzume, Rosalie Chiang as Chika Amabe, Roger Craig Smith as Minoru Okabe, Amanda C. Miller as Rumi Ninomiya, Mela Lee as Miki, Cam Clarke as Hitsujiro Munakata, Allegra Clark as Tsubame Iwato, Abby Trott as Aya, Jennie Kwan as Mami, and Jake Eberle as Shige. The dub is being directed by Bill Millsap at Bang Zoom! Studios, with Eric P. Sherman producing the dub and co-producers Mami Okada and Mio Moroe. Okada is also the casting director, and Jessica Peace is the production manager.

Storyline and Reception

“Suzume” follows the journey of Suzume Iwato, voiced by Nanoka Hara in the original Japanese version, and Sо̄ta Munakata, voiced by Hokuto Matsumura in his voice acting debut, as they explore the mysteries of a supernatural world known as “the Door-Closing Master.” Shinkai, who is known for his stunning visual storytelling and emotionally charged themes, wrote the screenplay, directed the film, and is credited with the original story. The film features character designs by Masayoshi Tanaka, animation direction by Kenichi Tsuchiya, and art direction by Takumi Tanji. Hollywood film composer Kazuma Jinnouchi and RADWIMPS collaborated on the film’s score, while TikTok performer Toaka provided one of the film’s theme songs.

The film has already surpassed the lifetime Japanese box office earnings of Shinkai’s previous film, “Weathering With You” (Tenki no Ko), with a cumulative total of 14,310,602,380 yen (about US$109 million) as of March 27. It has become the 14th highest-earning film of all time in Japan and the eighth highest-earning anime film of all time in Japan, with only Hayao Miyazaki’s “Ponyo” surpassing it in both rankings.

Global Release

Crunchyroll, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Wild Bunch International, and Eurozoom will be screening “Suzume” worldwide except in Asia starting on April 12. Crunchyroll will handle North American distribution, while Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Entertainment will handle distribution in Latin America, South America, Australia, New Zealand, the Middle East, Africa, and portions of Europe. The film is planned to screen in 199 countries and territories.
