S8UL Esports, one of India’s leading esports organizations, has cut ties with Skyesports after the latter’s CEO, Shiva Nandy, posted a controversial tweet that sparked widespread backlash. The tweet featured a quote from Game of Thrones, which read “South will remain an independent kingdom,” leading to accusations that Nandy was promoting separatism. Nandy’s tweet came in the wake of the state election results in Karnataka, where the Indian National Congress (INC) is poised to beat the current ruling party, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). As per the Election Commission’s website, the Congress party is leading in or has secured more than 136 out of the 224 state assembly seats. S8UL Esports co-founder Lokesh “Goldy” Jain responded to Nandy’s tweet by announcing that his organization will no longer participate in any Skyesports events or activities. Nandy has since deleted the tweet and provided an explanation, claiming that “Some people don’t understand and they will use the situation to mislead for their own advantage.”

Jain also weighed in on the controversy, questioning whether Nandy had considered his stature, influence, and persona before venting on the internet. He emphasized that India is one proud nation and that holding onto a 1946 mentality in 2023 will be problematic.

Nandy responded by accusing Jain of attempting to mislead audiences for his own benefit. He explained that his tweet was not meant to suggest that South India was a separate country but rather to highlight the distinct identities and cultural differences that exist within India. He emphasized that he is a proud Indian with a Dravidian ideology and that India is a highly democratic country with different states and ideologies.

Sid Joshi, S8UL Esports’ manager and content creator, also joined the Twitter conversation by subtweeting Nandy’s message and stating that some people should not be allowed to have Twitter accounts. When Nandy responded to Joshi’s response, Joshi demanded to know why Nandy had deleted his earlier tweet and accused him of being guilty.

Nandy claimed that he removed the tweet because he believed Goldy was attempting to divert attention away from his original statement, and that if he honestly believed that his tweet was offensive, he would apologise. Nandy’s charges were refuted by Joshi, who said that he was more popular than Skyesports’ previous tournament and asked him to “please speak a little calmly.” Nandy voiced his dismay in response and explained that he was referring to the current political scenario, not the country as a whole. Sid then responded to Nandy’s post, requesting that he chose his words carefully and with respect.

S8UL Esports has broken connections with Skyesports after the latter’s CEO, Shiva Nandy, sent out a divisive message that was heavily criticised for encouraging separatism. The post came in the aftermath of Karnataka’s state election results, in which the Indian National Congress is on track to defeat the incumbent ruling party, the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Lokesh “Goldy” Jain, co-founder of S8UL Esports, chastised Nandy for failing to consider his size, influence, and reputation before posting the tweet. Meanwhile, Sid Joshi, the manager of S8UL Esports and a content creator, accused Nandy of deceiving his fans. Nandy explained that his post was not intended to promote separatism, but rather to illustrate India’s many ethnic identities.
