Players are turning to these official streams to air their grievances because there isn’t much they can do to change the situation, even though they are aware that it’s unlikely that anything will come of it. It might all seem like a waste of time to some.

The game will include “part of what the team has set out to do, but not the entirety of what was discussed back at BlizzCon 2019,” according to Overwatch 2 director Aaron Keller. As in the first game, Overwatch 2’s upcoming “seasons” of content will include some PvE story missions, but the dedicated co-op Hero mode with dynamic character and ability progression is not an option. The team-versus-team shooter mode of Overwatch 2, like Overwatch before it, will receive almost all of the attention.

Some people, however, don’t care about the Overwatch boycott because they like the game. They agree that having all the promised PvE content would have been nice, but for the time being, they’re satisfied with what the game has to offer. Most of the time, this seems to be a “Love/Hate” situation, with people loving Overwatch but hating Blizzard. This is fair, as it appears that the developer is more concerned with making money than creating new, highly anticipated content that will keep players coming back.

Characters in the main team-based Overwatch mode cannot tell stories because they are replayable and infinitely variable. They essentially treat the characters like toy action figures for children, smashing them together for gameplay only.

But because betrayal always enrages people and ignites a fire within them, we should anticipate more boycotts and “cancel Overwatch” comments in OW2 streams until this problem is resolved—or until the situation calms down.
