While it was only released in China in 2015, Tencent later released a global version of the game titled Arena of Valor in 2016. The game preserved the core MOBA feel but had different protagonists based on Western themes. However, unlike the Chinese version, this game did not become very popular. Its declining popularity forced Tencent to announce earlier this year that it would release Honor of Kings globally.
Thus, the premium competitions for both the sports – the Honor of Kings World Champions Cup and the Arena of Valor International Championships were merged to form the Honor of Kings International Championships 2022.With the merger of the two games, Tencent was presented with another problem – how to manage the hero pool for both titles. While the games are similar, some of the heroes are different or have differences in their abilities. To combat this, a global tournament version of Honor of Kings has been launched, which includes elements to ensure a level playing field for both games.
The event will also pivot as the launch of Honor of Kings as the sport eyes global ambitions from 2023. Will it be able to replicate the popularity it has achieved in China? This is an expansion of Arena of Valor’s initial 2022 plan, and a merger between the two titles has been in the making for some time. KIC 2022 is the latest iteration of this vision.
