A flashback to the childhood of Kafka Hibino and Mina Ashiro begins the previous chapter. In the course of their chat, Mina inquires as to Kafka’s ideal role as a troop member.
Kafka is quite sure that he will become a Swordsman and a Gunner, and he will also set a record for suit combat release at 99%. He thinks his objective is silly, but Mina shares his aim: to save as many people as possible—troopers, civilians, and pets—while making sure no one under her supervision dies.
Getting back to the present, we see Kafka and Mina battling Kaiju No. 9. For trying to face the Kaiju on his own, Mina accuses Kafka of being dishonest. Chapter 109 reveals that Kafka wanted to go it alone at first, but he later realizes the value of teamwork thanks to Ichikawa.
