The firing range in Apex Legends received some of the biggest upgrades yet during season 16, Revelry, thanks to greatly expanded settings that allow for better practice routines and player warming up inside of it. Respawn is going above and beyond with a “totally overhauled” firing range that players have grown accustomed to as season 17 begins on May 9.

The duelling pit, a town, and a section for improving your movement skills are among the new areas in Apex’s second iteration of the firing range, which takes place on a completely redesigned map. For season 17, the firing range in Apex Legends gets a new location and a complete makeover:

At a recent press conference, Josh Mohan, the lead game designer at Respawn, explained the modifications made for the firing range. The new season, Arsenal, and the new legend Ballistic are both heavily focused on the weapons we use in battle royales, so the Respawn team felt it only right to give the firing range some attention as well. It was time for something completely different because the demands of a player base that was constantly growing outgrew the small map Apex started with.

“We’ve added a new map, there’s a bunch of new areas,” Mohan said. “We’ve expanded what’s in the existing targets and dummies area and we’ve also added combat options to the dummies so they can now fire back at you.”

The dummies’ new combat options build on what the previous season already offered, which saw the introduction of settings that let players alter the health and movement of the dummies on the field. Both new and seasoned players will be able to better simulate real encounters for their warm-up session now that the targets can fire back.

The remaining changes to the firing range were also greatly influenced by the ability to more accurately simulate the play-by-play action in an Apex game. The new areas, according to Mohan, include a town in the back that will simulate more actual doors, windows, and buildings. “We’ve added a duelling pit so that players can engage in one-on-one combat. Then there is a space where players can practise movement techniques.

Updates to the quality of life are also planned, and the new and improved firing range will allow players to finally join their friends in an ongoing firing range session. You won’t have to go back to the lobby and start the firing range again to let new people in. When season 17 debuts on May 9, players will be able to test out all the new features that come with Apex’s upgraded firing range.
