By no means is Dota 2 a new game. Older features that have been lost to time used to defy the MOBA metagame while major updates give the game a fresh coat of paint or an awesome new mechanic that can change how it is played. Some of these features were present in the early 2000s Warcraft era.

The majority of responses in the thread were from the middle of the 2010s and referenced ideas that are completely alien to players today. Examples include the inability to purchase Eye of Skadi on heroes with orb attacks or receiving extra gold for choosing a random hero, both of which were commonplace in Dota 2 back then.

One fan remembered a time when Invoker had to wait until level six to unlock any of his spells, so there were some old wolves in the mix. This version of the Invoker, despite sounding off, was thought to be broken because he would begin casting spell after spell through Invoke.

Another fan recalled a time when early-game items like the Ring of Health could be traded between players. Laning partners would frequently move around the item to utilize its healing properties, which isn’t possible in the current Dota 2 environment.

Even though these gameplay elements are no longer present in the game, they still exist today as markers of particular historical periods. These were the kinds of mechanics that players needed to become proficient with and master to advance in rank, so getting rid of them required finding replacements.

Even the more recent mechanics may eventually become relics of a bygone era, with only the players of today recalling them later on, as Dota shows no signs of slowing down. The majority of today’s players will continue to support Dota for years to come, that much is certain.
