It was thrilling to witness Duan’s swift response as he vanquished the twenty demons that had attacked Ma Jangkang, their mummified bodies lying in wait. Initially, Ma Jangkang seemed like your stereotypical evil thug, but it turns out he’s actually a softie who confused Twenty Demon for Duan’s entourage.

Chapter one of Chronicles of the Return of the Martial God details how Ma Jangkang, mentioning something about the Twenty Hungry Ghosts, interrupted Duan’s carriage ride on the way to Henan. We were bracing ourselves for an argument when, out of nowhere, Somi started devouring dumplings and he was gushing over her.
As Ma Jangkang began to describe what had happened to the Twenty Ghosts, she detailed how some of their bodies had been reanimated and were causing mayhem again. They made those corpses using a Demonic Technique, and Duan seemed to be aware of it.
As far as the Demonic Cult member is concerned, no one has ever handed this ability down through the generations, but Duan is aware that it existed in the past. The Black Wind Divine Demon, who battled the Heavenly Demon for three days and nights before dying long ago, employed it.
A person’s protracted struggle against that insane man shocked everyone. According to Ma Jangkang, he mistakes Duan’s allies for the Twenty Ghosts because of their peculiar masks. Ma Jangkang discreetly departed to find them because they were unrelated to the Twenty Ghosts.
The fact that Duan departed from Somi with Namgoong Elder and promised to return shortly suggests that he sensed something was amiss. The fact that Duan is once again going has clearly hurt Somi, but he assures her that he will return soon. The living dead attacked Ma Jangkang’s group, and even his friends took on that appearance.
