For fans of League of Legends, the ranked grind is about to get a lot more interesting. Riot Games today unveiled several significant changes coming to League’s ranked mode later this summer in a developer blog. Between the Platinum and Diamond ranks, a new Emerald rank will be available for summoners to enter.

“It’s important to us that the highest ranks retain the exclusivity and prestige they’ve historically had, so we’re not changing anything about how those ranks are distributed,” game design manager Evan “Revenancer” Humphries said. “Flattening the curve without compensating somehow would result in significant inflation in Diamond. To mitigate this we’re adding a new rank: Emerald… [which] will live between Diamond and Platinum and represent a roughly similar percentage of players as Platinum does today.”

Riot will also no longer include promotional series in the ranked climb due to long-running player complaints about how frustrating they can be when attempting to reach new heights. Since ranked was introduced more than ten years ago, players have always feared promos due to the possibility of encountering griefers and dealing with a string of unlucky games.
Players can simply rank up when they have the required amount of LP because the stress of continuously slamming through ranked promos for ranks greatly outweighs the advantages of the drama and excitement they would also bring.
Players will only need to play five placement games for the second split of the year because the majority of the top climbers have already completed their 10 placement games for the first split. Players can now learn their rank in half the time it used to take thanks to Riot’s decision to keep the five-game placement change for the upcoming season.
Riot is planning to implement a variety of changes that will ultimately make it simpler to advance in rank and climb the ladder. Additionally, these adjustments ought to give a much more accurate picture of the player base and where they fit on the leaderboards going forward. On Monday, July 17, the first ranked split of 2023 for the League will come to an end. These adjustments are anticipated to take effect when Split Two launches immediately after Split One concludes.
