Yuvraj Singh was born on this day in 1981, he announced his entrance on the big stage with a blazing 84 and some electrifying fielding against Australia in the 2000 ICC Knockout in Nairobi. He quickly became India’s next future star. The excitement grew when he and Mohammad Kaif resurrected a dormant pursuit with a match-winning partnership in the 2002 NatWest Series final. Yuvraj has a tendency to blow hot and cold during his international career, but when he was on song, there was no stopping him.

He emulated Garry Sobers’ milestone of six sixes in an over, sending Stuart Broad into orbit while batting for the fastest international T20I half-century – off 12 balls – at the 2007 World T20. In 2011, he led India to the 50-over World Cup with a Player-of-the-Series performance of 362 runs and 15 wickets. However, his shortcomings were apparent in Tests, and other than three standout innings, his Test career never really took off. He was diagnosed with cancer shortly after the 2011 World Cup and was treated in the United States. After recovering, he returned to India’s limited-overs sides but could not regain his former form.
