POWERHOUSES OF WINDIES STRUGGLE ON SLOW PITCHES

Winning the toss has been a very important factor at this World Cup, Bangladesh won the toss and put West Indies into bat first. Bangladesh got off to a very good start, keeping their grip tight over the Windies batsmen. By the end of the powerplay, West Indies managed to only score 29 runs with the loss of two wickets. The batsmen were finding it very difficult to middle the ball, both openers couldn’t do much but a steady innings from Roston chase (39 of 46) helped the Windies to reach a challenging score. Cameos from Jason Holder (15 of 5) and Nicholas Pooran (40 of 22) gave the Windies some hope going into the dressing room.

Most of the Windies batsmen struggled to time the ball. In a bizarre incident, West Indies skipper Kieron Pollard decided to retire hurt himself in the 13th over against Bangladesh. Pollard was struggling to hit the ball, so in the 13th over of the match Pollard decided it would be better off if he didn’t waste any more balls. Pollard walked back to the dressing room on 8 off 16, sending in Nic Pooran to the crease. On the very next ball, Taskin Ahmed got a touch from a straight drive from Roston Chase as it hit the stumps, Andre Russell was caught way down the pitch which resulted in a run out.

By the end of their innings West Indies managed to reach 142 in their 20 overs. Bangladesh bowling department did well to restrict the Windies batsmen. Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman and Shoriful Islam each picked up 2 wickets.
