Why did SRH let go of Kane Williamson?

With the bat, the right-hander from New Zealand had a terrible competition, scoring only 216 runs in 13 games at an average of 19.63 and a strike rate of 93.50. His powerplay strike rate was 76.4. In the T20 World Cup, Williamson averaged 35.6, but his strike rate was only 116.33.

Sunrisers Hyderabad has opted to part ways with their captain from the previous season, Kane Williamson ahead of the 2023 Indian Premier League auction. Last season, the Orange Army retained Williamson (INR 14 crore) ahead of Rashid Khan and ended 8th in the points table.

But the question is why was Kane retained in the first place in place of either Warner or Khan, “Yeah, it’s going to be very interesting to see what the new management does at Sunrisers with regard to Kane, because you make a big decision to begin with in retaining a player like Kane Williamson. At the beginning of a major auction, you back him as your leader, everyone recognises that he’s one of the game’s great modern leaders,” former SRH coach Tom Moody told Star Sports. Now SRH doesn’t only have to look for a leader but also find a suitable replacement for Williamson on the side.

Kane has had bad form for long

SRH had the best chance to do so in the mega auctions but now in the mini auction even though they are going with the biggest purse it does not guarantee that they would find a suitable player to replace Kane. This is how Kane fared for them in the last 5 seasons:

He won the orange cap in 2018 and is the only non-opener to have done so, he did that in the absence of David Warner, in that year SRH reached the finals but lost to CSK. Even after that season, Kane remained a good back-up option but in the 2nd half of 2021 he was handed the captaincy full time but he could not deliver. With his injuries and his bad form, it would be interesting to see if Kane is picked up in the mini-auction 2023.
