Poonam Yadav is a woman cricketer who represents team India Internationally. Poonam was born on August 24, 1991. Poonam’s father is Raghuveer Singh Yadav and he was a former Indian army officer. Her mother’s name is Munna Devi and she is a housewife. Poonam was born in Mainpuri town which is situated in Uttar Pradesh state of India. Poonam had to leave Mainpuri town and had to move to Agra in order to convert her dream into profession. She always wanted to be a professional cricketer. She used to get her training at the Eklavya Sports Stadium. Poonam after spending three years at the academy was on the verge of quitting cricket. She went through a professional slump, but was motivated by her father to pursue her career in cricket. Poonam plays as a leg spin bowler for the national women’s side.
Poonam played in the Indian side that advanced to the final of the 2017 Women’s Cricket World Cup. England were the hosts of the World Cup. India was somehow defeated by England by a mere margin of nine runs in the finals. She was selected to India’s team that went for the 2018 ICC Women’s World Twenty20 event which took place in the West Indies in October 2018. She was expected as one of the key players to watch before the competition. She made her place in the top five of the women’s T20I rankings, finishing third in June 2018. Poonam grabbed eight wickets in five matches. She was India’s joint-leading wicket-taker in the competition. She took 57 wickets in just 39 T20Is. In September 2018, She became India’s top wicket-taker in Twenty20 Internationals.

Poonam Yadav became the only bowler who was retained for every match that India team played in the year 2018 in the T20 format of the game. Poonam was selected to the Indian team which went for the 2020 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup which took place in Australia in January 2020. The best performance was seen in the initial match between India and Australia, where she took 4 wickets in 4 overs and gave just 19 runs. This was by far one of the best performances by Poonam. In that world Cup India reached the finals, but lost to Australia. Poonam was able to grab 1 wicket in the finals and gave 30 runs. Australia may have won the World Cup, but Indian players like Poonam Yadav and others showed that they were no less.
Poonam has had an experienced career till now. She has played a total of 131 International matches including all the three formats of the game. She has played most of her career’s matches in T20 format where she has taken 98 wickets in 72 matches with an economy rate of 5.75. In her ODI career she has played 58 matches and took 80 wickets with an economy of 3.97. Poonam was selected to India’s Test team for their one-off match against the England women’s cricket team in May 2021. She was also selected to India’s team for the 2022 Women’s Cricket World Cup which took place in New Zealand in January 2022. She has played only one Test match in which she took 3 wickets. Poonam’s leg spin bowling has done miracles for the Indian team. She has proved herself as an important asset of the Indian team.
