ICC Under-19 World Cup 2022: UAE Create History, Beat Ireland in Plate Final to be Crowned Champions

UAE became the second non-Test full-member nation to win the ICC Under-19 World Cup plate trophy as they beat Ireland by eight wickets to end their campaign on a high.

The United Arab Emirates created history in the ICC Under-19 World Cup 2022. They defeated Ireland by eight wickets to win the Plate Trophy for the first time in their history. Prior to this achievement, Nepal had become the first non-Test playing nation to have won the ICC Under-19 World Cup plate trophy. They had beaten New Zealand by one wicket in the 2006 edition that was held in Sri Lanka. UAE had already created a record in the ICC Under-19 World Cup 2022 edition when they had defeated the hosts West Indies by a big margin of 65 runs.

A superb all-round display by the UAE batters and bowlers saw them outclass Ireland by eight wickets in their Plate League match at Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain. Dhruv Parashar, Jash Giyanani, and Adhitya Shetty took two wickets apiece. Kai Smith and Punya Mehra hit attractive knocks of 49 and 48 as UAE ended their campaign on the ultimate high.

Ireland chose to bat and immediately, they were in big trouble. Ali Naseer sent back Jack McGuire for 7. Jack Dickson and Joshua Cox stitched a vital stand to revive Ireland but Jash Giyanani sent back Cox for 6. Giyanani struck again as he removed Tim Tector for 1. Jack Dickson grew in confidence with a six off Nilansh Keswani while Philippus le Roux gave him good support.

But, le Roux was sent back by Adhitya Shetty. Jack Dickson neared his fifty with a six off Keswani while Scott MacBeth hit a six off Shetty. But, Dhruv Parashar sent back MacBeth and Dickson in quick succession to dent Ireland’s chances of a big score. Liam Doherty took Ireland past 100 but he was sent back for Afzal Khan. Matthew Humphreys and Jamie Forbes hung around but they were sent back quickly as Ireland was bowled out for 122.

UAE make Big Progress

Kai Smith and Dhruv Parashar made rapid progress as they scored at five runs per over. Jamie Forbes sent back Dhruv Parashar for 14. Punya Mehra got going with two boundaries off Forbes. The boundaries continued coming, with Kai Smith nearing his fifty. But, he was sent back by Humphreys for 49.

Punya Mehra continued to target the bowling and he sealed the game in style. He blasted a six off Humphreys to seal the match in grand style. UAE now joins Bangladesh, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Nepal, West Indies, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, and England as winners in the Plate League.
