The Bangla Tigers won the toss and chose to bat first. Bangladesh made two changes to their starting lineup, bringing in Mominul for Yasir Ali and Taskin Ahmed for Ebadot Hossain, who is out with a back ailment. Bangladesh have three spinners and two spinners in their attack, with Shakib slated to bowl. Meanwhile, India read the pitch differently and changed Kuldeep Yadav, the Player of the Match in the first Test, with Unadkat. Between Unadkat’s two outings, India played 118 Tests, the second-most missed games for any Test cricketer.

Umesh and Siraj both discovered movement with the new ball, but neither pitched it high enough to fully exploit the grassy ground. This resulted in a number of misses, and Zakir and Najmul Hossain Shanto were able to withstand the new-ball spells. Unadkat didn’t find as much movement as he came as the first change, but his higher release point meant he got more bounce from the surface. He was soon bowling with four slips, a gully, and a short leg, and consistently striking hitters on the gloves. With Bangladesh on 39, Zakir decided to cut Unadkat’s delivery, only to be undone by the extra bounce. The ball struck him on the glove and flew to the fourth slip, giving Unadkat his maiden Test wicket.
