Pakistan played an exciting game against archrival India at the MCG in their first Super 12 match. Despite leading India for the majority of the second innings while defending 160, they fumbled in the end with Virat Kohli’s 82-run unbeaten innings proving decisive. When Pakistan spinner Mohammad Nawaz had 16 runs to defend in the penultimate over, he collapsed under pressure. The humiliating moment occurred against Zimbabwe when Pakistan was unable to chase down a middling score of 130. Pakistan needed three runs to win in two balls and lost two wickets in a row, including a final-ball run out, as Zimbabwe won by one run in Perth.

With two straight defeats and South Africa’s win over India, many commentators had written off Pakistan’s prospects of reaching the semi-finals. However, there were several plot twists and turns. Pakistan trounced the Netherlands by six wickets in Perth, then thrashed South Africa by 33 runs in a rain-shortened match in Sydney. However, the victories did not instil optimism in Pakistan’s qualification prospects. Their chances were slim, or, to put it another way, Pakistan’s fate in the T20 World Cup was never in their hands. The Netherlands astonished the world on November 6th by giving Pakistan and Bangladesh a new lease on life. They upset the Proteas with a 13-run win in Adelaide on the same day as the Pakistan-Bangladesh match.
