Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan will face a four-match ban after his on-field antics on Friday in the Dhaka Premier League (DPL). In a match between Mohammedan Sporting Club and Abahani Limited, Shakib had appealed for an lbw against Bangladesh wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim. When the appeal was declined, the all-rounder lost his bearings and let his frustrations out on the field. He charged towards the umpire in his anger and kicked the stumps off. The incident has warranted a rightful four-match ban for the former Bangladesh captain, and it adds to a list of controversies he has been involved in his career.

It was not the only time Shakib lost his cool with the umpires during the game. Earlier in the match, the officials had decided to halt the game as rain had started to come down. However, Mohammedan skipper Shakib was left furious with the decision as the players were instructed to go off the field with one ball remaining in the sixth over. The all-rounder, who is known for his cool and composed demeanour on the pitch, gave the cricketing world a surprise when he lashed out.

Shakib did go on to apologize on social media to the fans and the franchises participating in the 2021 edition of the DPL. He said that his actions were a human error and vowed that he would keep a check on his emotions and not repeat anything of the sort again.

“I apologise to the teams, management, tournament officials, and organizing committee for this human error. Hopefully, I won’t be repeating this again in the future. Thanks and love you all,” read a part of his statement on social media platform Facebook.

FRANCHISE CHIEF’S VIEW

Mohammedan Sporting Club committee chairman Masuduzzaman said that while the decision to ban the all-rounder was correct, an inquest had to be made over why it had come to pass in the first place. With issues pertaining to mental health a serious matter in the world of sport today, Shakib’s outburst will be examined, said the chairman.

“We have not got any official letter so far but we have learnt that the umpires committee has recommended a four-match ban,” Masuduzzaman told Cricbuzz on Saturday.

“We will appeal to the board and ask them that they must dig the matter and see why Shakib was prompted to take such a step. Naturally, it was not acceptable but at the same time we have to find out why it happened,” he added.

Shakib’s out-of-character behavior went viral as videos of him uprooting the stumps have since then been shared countless times from various social media handles over the past few days. The all-rounder is one of Bangladesh’s most prolific cricketers, and quite possibly the best all-rounder the country has ever produced.
