Cricket South Africa (CSA) has recommended the SA20 franchises sign a Wildcard apiece, with no upper restriction on the new player’s salary. However, the minimum amount should be R175,000, and the signing must occur by December 30. A wildcard might be a South African or an unsigned international player. SA20 clarified that a player who was not on the auction registry might be signed. The new rule obviously allows each team to have a player strength of 18 cricketers, with a maximum of eight overseas players. If a player becomes unavailable after joining as a wildcard, the franchises will be free to find a substitute.

The CSA stated that no more than four foreign players may be used in the starting XI at any time during a match. The inaugural edition of the competition will begin on January 10. The Salary Cap was originally set at $ 2 million, and it served as the foundation for the September 19 auction in Cape Town. Following that, the CSA implemented the Wildcard rule, which actually undermines the Salary Cap’s integrity. The new rule’s impact on the league and players remains to be seen, but the clause, with no maximum restriction on salary, may draw some major names who have hitherto avoided the league.

“The Wildcard Player need not have been registered for the Player Auction. Each Franchisee shall accordingly be permitted to have a maximum of 8 Overseas Players in its Registered Squad (if a Wildcard player is taken by the Franchise). The maximum number of Overseas Players (currently 4) on the field of play at any time during any Match remains unchanged”, said a release by CSA.
