Rohit Sharma surpasses Gautam Gambhir to become captain with 2nd highest number of wins in IPL

Kieron Pollard's stunning onslaught helped Mumbai Indians record an improbable win over Chennai Super Kings in a run-fest in Delhi.

Mumbai Indians (MI) skipper Rohit Sharma is now the captain with the second highest number of wins in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Rohit recorded his 72nd win as a skipper in the cash-rich league, following the defending champions’ triumph by a margin of four wickets in an IPL 2021 league encounter against Chennai Super Kings (CSK). The opener surpassed Gautam Gambhir with whom he was tied earlier at 71 wins. Only CSK skipper MS Dhoni has won more matches as the captain in IPL than Rohit, having registered a triumph in 115 games.

The MI skipper earlier became the first Indian to feature in 350 T20 games, when he walked out for the toss of the league encounter against CSK.

Mumbai Indians’ Historic Chase

MI completed their first ever successful chase in excess of 200 in IPL history, after being handed a stern target of 219 runs. All-rounder Kieron Pollard was the top performer for the Mumbai-based franchise with the bat, smashing 87 runs off 34 deliveries in an innings comprising of six boundaries and eight sixes. Opener Quinton de Kock was the second highest run-getter after Pollard, having accumulated 38 runs off 28 deliveries with four fours and a maximum to his credit. Sam Curran was the pick of the bowlers for CSK, accounting for three dismissals. Shardul Thakur, Ravindra Jadeja and Moeen Ali picked a wicket apiece.

Ambati Rayadu helped CSK reached a strong total of 218 runs, smashing 72 runs off 27 deliveries. Rayadu’s innings comprised of four boundaries and seven sixes. Faf du Plessis and Moeen Ali provided quality support, smashing half-centuries. The South African accumulated 50 runs off 28 deliveries on the back of two boundaries and four sixes. The English all-rounder scored 58 runs off 36 deliveries in an innings comprising of five boundaries and as many sixes.

Pollard was the pick of the bowlers, accounting for two wickets while conceding just 12 runs. Trent Boult and Jasprit Bumrah chipped in with a dismissal apiece, in a game that was certainly great fun for all involved.

MI have now recorded four wins and three defeats having played seven games. CSK remain on top of the table, with five triumphs and two losses in the same number of matches.
