Delhi Capitals (DC) opener Prithvi Shaw on Thursday, became the second batsman after Ajinkya Rahane to hit six boundaries in an over in the history of Indian Premier League (IPL). Shaw recorded the milestone in an IPL 2021 league match against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), with Shivam Mavi the unfortunate bowler. The 21-year-old further became the first batsman in the history of the cash-rich league to start an innings with six consecutive boundaries, while chasing a target. Rahane is a part of the Delhi-based franchise for the ongoing 2021 edition of IPL, making it all the more interesting.

The first boundary was lofted firmly over the bowler’s head, following a full delivery with a hint of inward movement. The second ball was dispatched over mid-wicket with a fine flick, after the delivery was too straight in line and full yet again. Shaw followed that up with a boundary through the covers, after an overpitched delivery that had width on offer.

The fourth four was hit through the covers yet again, after a slower full toss by Mavi with substantial width. Shaw’s fifth boundary was steered sweetly behind point, following a short and wide delivery. The final four was lofted over extra cover after a full delivery bowled outside off. Curiously, both Shaw and Mavi share the same middle name – Pankaj.

Shaw further went on to complete his half-century off 18 balls, which is the fastest in the ongoing IPL 2021.

3rd most expensive first over in IPL history

Mavi conceded 25 runs in the over, making it the third most expensive first over of an innings in the cash-rich league. The most expensive opening over in the history of the IPL was bowled by Abu Nechim, during a league encounter between defending champions Mumbai Indians (MI) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).

The second position in this list is held by Harbhajan Singh, who leaked 26 runs in an IPL match between MI and the Kolkata-based franchise, back in 2013. Varun Aaron is placed on the fourth position, having conceded 23 runs in a game of the cash-rich league between Rajasthan Royals (RR) and RCB in 2019.
