Tamil Nadu has produced some champion cricketers in the last couple of years for India. Ravichandran Ashwin and Dinesh Karthik are prime examples of how they have gone on to give India glory on the global stage. But, one individual has managed to carve his niche in Tamil Nadu and international cricket in his own way. His father’s name is Sundar. But, he took up his first name in tribute to his teacher. He had sponsored his early cricket education. Thus, as a tribute to his teacher PD Washington and his father’s name, Washington Sundar became one of the new stars in Indian cricket.

His Test debut came at a crisis for India. Half of their squad were injured in Australia. Heading into the deciding Test in Brisbane, Washington Sundar was given a Test debut. On paper, it should have been a no-contest. But, Sundar showed his mettle in a brilliant display of all-round skill. With the ball, his first wicket was Steve Smtih. With the bat, he hit a fifty on debut and shared a partnership of 123 with Shardul Thakur that changed the entire complexion of the match. Washington Sundar’s exploits played a small but vital role in India breaching the Gabba Fortress after 33 years. India had won the series in Australia for the second consecutive time.

Prior to his Gabba heroics, Washington Sundar had acquired a reputation as one of the most economical offspinners in the country. He would open the bowling in the powerplay and also bowl in the death. That is the trait that made Washington Sundar one of the best in the business. Injuries and a recent bout of coronavirus have stalled his progress. But, given the right opportunities, Washington Sundar is one of the most promising cricketers in India currently.

Washington Sundar International Debut

Washington Sundar made his ODI and T20I debut against Sri Lanka in Mohali and Mumbai respectively in 2017. Four years later, he made his Test debut against Australia in Brisbane in January 2021.

Washington Sundar International Cricket

When he made his international debut, Washington Sundar had a reputation of being an economical bowler who could bat a bit. His batting did not come to the fore in ODIs and T20Is but it is in Tests where he has prospered. Washington Sundar has an average of 66, with three fifties in four Tests. He hit 62 on debut against Australia. When England came to India for the four-Test series in 2021, he impressed by smashing an unbeaten 85 in Chennai. Although India lost the Test, Washington Sundar had made a name for himself. He missed out on a century in Ahmedabad when he was left stranded on 96. But, it is proven. Washington Sundar CAN bat.

In Twenty20 Internationals, he has impressed with his economy. His economy rate of under six throughout the 2018 Nidahas Trophy title campaign helped him win the Man of the Series Award.

Washington Sundar IPL

Prior to international cricket, Washington Sundar was one of the stars in India’s Under-19 Cricket World Cup in 2016. He hit his maiden first-class century for Tamil Nadu in the Ranji clash against Tripura. In 2017, he was one of the replacements for Ravichandran Ashwin in the Rising Pune Supergiant Team. He once again impressed with his control and economy for the franchise. After the Pune team disbanded, he was purchased by the Royal Challengers Bangalore side.
