Suranga Lakmal

As a child, he had impressed veteran Sri Lanka administrators with his ability get bounce. His height gave him an edge that few Sri Lankan bowlers enjoyed. He had hailed from Matara, a town which had produced the legend of Sanath Jayasuriya. There were high hopes from him. But, Suranga Lakmal was plagued by a problem that many upcoming cricketers faced born outside Colombo. Lakmal did not have adequate nutrition and this stunted his stamina. He was always prone to injury and lacked penetration due to fatigue. But, in his 12-year-career, Suranga Lakmal ended up as the second-most successful pacer for Sri Lanka behind Chaminda Vaas.

In the last three-four years, Suranga Lakmal became the pace spearhead that Sri Lanka wanted after the inability of Lasith Malinga to be in the longer format. His average of 22 in overseas Tests from 2018 made Suranga Lakmal one of the best bowlers in the world. But, it was indeed a shock when he announced that he was going to retire from international cricket after the series against India in 2022. When he is gone from the scene, Suranga Lakmal will have etched his name as one of the best bowlers to have emerged out of Sri Lanka in the last decade.

Suranga Lakmal International Debut

Suranga Lakmal made his Test debut against the West Indies in Colombo in March 2010. Prior to that, he had made his ODI debut against India in Nagpur in 2009. His Twenty20 International debut came in 2011 against England in Bristol.

In the 2018 series against South Africa, Lakmal ensured Sri Lanka whitewashed the Proteas. From 2018 to 2021, Lakmal was one of the finest bowlers for Sri Lanka.
