For a long time, Bangladesh lacked a potent pace bowler as a back-up to the ageing Mashrafe Mortaza. The spin pedigree in Bangladesh cricket was rich, with the likes of Mohammad Rafique and Shakib Al Hasan doing wonders. But, in the summer of 2015, with Bangladesh cricket finally making giant waves in the cricket world, there emerged a bowler who redefined his art in a very uniquely Bangladesh style.
Left-armers in Bangladesh are plenty. But, a pace bowler with variations was something of a novelty. The year 2015 saw Bangladesh enter the quarterfinal of the ICC World Cup, spectacularly dumping out England. In that same year, they registered bilateral series wins against India, South Africa and Pakistan. It was in that year that they were presented a bowler with a lethal cutter who bamboozled opposition.
For Bangladesh cricket, the year 2015 is special because they unearthed a gem called Mustafizur Rahman. In his youth, he had impressed local clubs 300 kms away from Dhaka with his ability to bowl cutters. When he was admitted to the academy, there was reportedly a dare from Anamul Haque that he needed to bowl a left-handed offspinner. Working on that dare and motivation, Mustafizur Rahman developed the Mustafiz cutter which bamboozled oppositions. His clever change of pace and length made him a rare asset. The yorkers plus the cutter all made him a hot property outside of Bangladesh, even garnering big bucks in the IPL for Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Who can forget the yorker to clean up Andre Russell in IPL 2016? The clever variations in pace that had the likes of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni fooled. Even a vicious shoulder tackle from Dhoni did not deter him as Bangladesh registered a bilateral series win for the first time against their neighbours. He underwent shoulder surgery in 2018 which dimmed his potency. But, it did not dent his passion for wickets, ending up with a five-wicket haul in the ICC World Cup 2019 clash against Pakistan in Lord’s. As a T20I and ODI bowler, Mustafizur has changed the way Bangladesh cricket approaches games.
Mustafizur Rahman made his international debut in the Twenty20 International against Pakistan in Mirpur in April 2015. Two months later, he made his ODI debut against India and created history. All that resulted in his Test debut against South Africa in Chattogram.
In his first year or accurately, the first series in 2015, Mustafizur Rahman was the difference-maker. He picked up two five-wicket hauls in his first two matches against India. This made him only the second bowler after Brian Vitori of Zimbabwe to take two five-wicket hauls in his first two games. As the years have progressed, Mustafizur Rahman has become one of the best bowlers in limited-overs cricket. He is one of the few Bangladesh bowlers to have taken a five-wicket haul in Twenty20 Internationals.
But, the unique thing about Mustafizur is that he has taken five-wicket hauls in both ODI and T20I World Cups. His haul of 5/22 in a T20I came against New Zealand in Kolkata in 2016. His major ODI World Cup five-wicket haul came in Lord’s in 2019 against Pakistan. Thus, Mustafizur Rahman has already done things which many Bangladesh bowlers have not done.
Mustafizur Rahman joined Shakib Al Hasan in joining the big leagues of the Indian Premier League. In 2016, he was picked by Sunrisers Hyderabad, and immediately he showed his impact. Bowling with tremendous economy in the death overs, Mustafizur Rahman ended with 17 wickets from 16 matches as Sunrisers Hyderabad won the IPL title. However, injuries in the subsequent years plus the emergence of Rashid Khan did not give him many chances. Mustafizur Rahman then played 14 matches for Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2021 and took 14 wickets. Overall, Mustafizur Rahman in IPL has played 38 matches to take 38 wickets.
