His home was destroyed in the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami, but he was lucky to be alive. From the ruins of his home in Balapitiya, a dream was forged for Lokuge Dinesh Chandimal. After starting his career with Dharmasoka College in Ambalangoda, he moved to Ananda College in Colombo. In that college year, he became one of the few players to score over 1000 runs in a season. In Youth cricket, his wicketkeeping skills were excellent, managing over 50+ dismissals on a consistent basis. All his magnificent performances saw him getting fast-tracked into the Sri Lanka team.
In just his second ODI, Chandimal created history as he became the youngest Sri Lankan to hit a century. On Test debut, on a spicy wicket in Durban, his twin fifties helped Sri Lanka create history in South Africa. Chandimal had a good liking for India and till 2015, he was in the form of his life. The peak of his form came in 2016 when he smashed six consecutive fifties in England and Australia. But, from 2017 till 2022, his form nosedived across all formats.
It is difficult to make sense of Chandimal the captain. During the 2014 ICC World T20, he was injured and then suspended as Lasith Malinga helped them win the title for the first time. During the 2018 series against West Indies, he was at the center of a ball-tampering scandal that tarnished his legacy. In the middle of his lean patch, Chandimal managed to smash the highest score in first-class cricket in Sri Lanka as he hit 354*.
Dinesh Chandimal made his international Test debut against South Africa in Durban in 2011. His ODI debut came against Zimbabwe in 2010 in Harare. His first international match was a T20I against New Zealand in Providence, Guyana during the 2010 ICC World T20 in the West Indies.
Chandimal’s first major knock in international cricket was a blazing 111 in an ODI against India in Harare. That aggressive knock helped Sri Lanka knock India out of the tournament which also included Zimbabwe. In fact, Chandimal had a special liking for India. Two of his top scores in Tests have come against India. One knock in Delhi in 2017 and one in Galle in 2015 ensured Sri Lanka did not suffer defeat against India. Perhaps, the only criticism of Chandimal is that he has never managed to hit many tons overseas. Out of his 11 Test tons, only one has come outside of Asia and that was in England in 2016.
In ODIs, he has been frustratingly inconsistent, showing patches of great form and low scores. It is this inconsistency that has hurt Chandimal in a big way.
Dinesh Chandimal played only for one season in the IPL and that was with the Rajasthan Royals in 2012.
