When a Sri Lankan player makes a big impact against India, he is immediately earmarked for future greatness. That seems to be the case with Danushka Gunathilaka. When he smashed 77 in the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy against India at The Oval to chase down a target of 322, Danushka Gunathilaka was immediately in the spotlight. His consistency in the last couple of series saw Gunathilaka cement his reputation. But, in subsequent years, he was involved in his fair share of controversies. Indiscipline, code of conduct breaches and breaching the bio-bubble have all hampered his growth as a solid player for Sri Lanka.
In ODIs, Gunathilaka has established himself as a solid individual. But, in Tests and T20Is, Gunathilaka has flattered to deceive. His bowling has been solid but has lacked penetration at consistent times. If he can stay away from controversies, then Danushka Gunathilaka can go on to become a key player for Sri Lanka in their transition period.
Danushka Gunathilaka made his international debut in 2015 against the West Indies in an ODI in Colombo. His T20I debut came against New Zealand in Mount Maunganui in 2016. His Test debut came against India at Galle in 2017.
In 2017, Gunathilaka’s first major knock saw Sri Lanka create a new record. He smashed a century and shared a partnership of 229 with Niroshan Dickwella as Sri Lanka chased down a target of 300 for the first time at home. In that same year, he shared a century partnership with Kusal Mendis to help Sri Lanka to chase down 322. Gunathilaka has achieved tremendous success as a player during Sri Lanka’s return to Pakistan after 10 years. He hit his second century and was consistent with the bat.
In the series against the West Indies in 2021, he hit three consecutive fifties but he was involved in obstructing the field in one match. Gunathilaka is the first player to be given out obstructing the field in an ODI which became a big issue.
Danushka Gunathilaka has been actively involved in T20 Leagues. But, he has not played in the IPL. For the Lanka Premier League, he played for the Galle Gladiators. In the Bangladesh Premier League, he was part of the Sylhet Sixers franchise.
