You emerge as the leading wicket-taker in two editions of the ICC World T20. Yet, you cannot establish a place in the playing 11 of Australia. That is the life of Adam Zampa. If there has been one factor that has been responsible for Australia completing the set of ICC events, it is due to Adam Zampa. It is a major travesty that Australia has not made him a permanent member of the Australian limited-overs side. The fact that he could be the next big thing in Test cricket due to his legspin continues to perplex many followers of Australian cricket.
His action is almost similar to Shane Warne, like every Australian legspinner. But, he has had an impact on several occasions in ODIs and T20Is. In 2016, he was one of the leading wicket-takers in the ICC World T20 in India. It was a surprise when he was not picked in the Australia Test side when they toured India in 2017. This is despite the fact that he was one of the leading bowlers in the IPL for Rising Pune Supergiant thanks to his haul of 6/19.
But, Australia may have rectified the mistake and they gave him an extended run in the ICC World T20 2021. David Warner, Glenn Maxwell, and Mitchell Marsh might have stolen the show. But, it was the brilliance of Adam Zampa who consistently helped Australia get the breakthrough in the Group of Death. Zampa’s contributions have ensured that Australia is now a total package in limited-overs cricket.
Adam Zampa made his T20I debut against South Africa in Durban in 2016. He made his ODI debut in the same year against New Zealand in Wellington.
Adam Zampa was classified as a bowler who would excel in limited-overs cricket. After a successful domestic stint with South Australia Redbacks in 2015/16, he was on the side for the ODI and T20Is that year. His breakthrough performance was a tense match against Bangladesh in which he took 3/23. He was one of the leading wicket-taker in the ICC World T20 2016 for Australia.
He was in and out of the Australia side as they struggled for team composition. But, in 2021, Zampa was one of the stars in Australia’s T20I triumph in the UAE. He picked up five wickets against Bangladesh and contributed consistently. His superb economy rate and strike rate ensured that Australia finally completed the set.
Adam Zampa made a big mark in the IPL for Rising Pune Supergiant in 2016. He took 6/19 against Sunrisers Hyderabad and it showed his class. Apart from Rising Pune Supergiant, he has also featured for Royal Challengers Bangalore in IPL 2021. But, he left the tournament midway due to the coronavirus pandemic. In 14 matches, he has taken 21 wickets at an average of 21 and an economy rate of 7.73.
