Prasidh Krishna, a fast bowler for India and the Rajasthan Royals, has been ruled out of the IPL 2023 due to a spinal stress fracture that would necessitate surgery. This also puts him in serious danger for the 50-over World Cup, which will be held in his home country in October and November. Prasidh, who turns 27 on Sunday, hasn’t played competitive cricket since India’s ODI series against Zimbabwe in August. When he initially broke down in September, he was selected for India A’s white-ball series against New Zealand A, and tests revealed a stress fracture.

Prasidh has been receiving rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru since and was initially expected to have fully recovered in time for the Ranji Trophy knockouts in January-February. The injury, however, has not healed properly, prompting the NCA and Royals’ medical team, who have been working closely together, to propose surgery. Prasidh was on the radar of national selectors at the time of his injury because of his height, speed, and harsh lengths in the middle overs in ODIs. This is also one of the reasons the Royals spent INR 10 crore for him at the IPL auction last year, making him the third-most expensive fast bowler acquisition ahead of the 2022 season.

IPL to begin on March 31

Prasidh was the Royals’ second-highest wicket-taker in a season that saw them reach their first final since 2008. He took 19 wickets in 17 matches, including a season-high 3 for 22 against Royal Challengers Bangalore in Qualifier 2. Prasidh went on to play in India’s white-ball trips to England and the Caribbean that followed. In 14 ODIs, he has 25 wickets at an average of 23.92 and an economy rate of 5.32. The Royals are likely to find a successor soon for the 2023 season, which will span from March 31 to May 28.

The IPL will begin five days after the inaugural Women’s Premier League final on March 26, with all ten teams in action on the first weekend: after Titans play CSK on Friday, Punjab Kings play Kolkata Knight Riders in Mohali, and Lucknow Super Giants play Delhi Capitals in Lucknow on Saturday (April 1); Sunrisers Hyderabad play Rajasthan Royals in Hyderabad, and Royal Challengers Bangalore play Mumbai Indians in Bengaluru on Sunday (April 2). The schedule for the four playoff matches has yet to be revealed, with the exception of Ahmedabad being named as the location for the championship match.
