Australia was humiliated on day three of the Delhi Test against India, collapsing on Sunday morning as Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja worked their magic at Arun Jaitley Stadium. After Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne led the visitors to 1-61 at stumps on day two, it was hoped that the Australian top order would capitalise on the quick start and set an intimidating mark for India in the fourth innings.

Instead, Australia was bowled out for 113 after losing 9-47 in a tumultuous morning session on day three, putting India within striking reach of retaining the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The batting was reckless, and the shot selection was poor; the Australians repeatedly depended on sweeping India’s spinners, which backfired spectacularly. Ashwin dismissed Head for 43 in the first over of the day, with the veteran off-spinner getting a delivery to turn sharply and kiss the outside edge, with the Indian wicketkeeper holding onto a low chance.

Indian spinners were on fire

Ashwin trapped Australian vice-captain Steve Smith on the front pad for 9 after attempting a needless sweep shot. What followed was a terrible stretch of play before the break, in which Australia was defeated 4-0 in 11 deliveries. Labuschagne returned to a full ball from Jadeja that slipped under his bat and smacked into the middle stump, and he was out for 35. At the other end, injured replacement Matthew Renshaw mistimed a sweep shot against Ashwin and was ruled out LBW for 2 – the Queenslander wasted a review before limping back to the pavilion.

Peter Handscomb, perhaps Australia’s finest batter in the first innings, was out for a duck on the next delivery after edging Jadeja to the first slip, where Virat Kohli took a superb catch. After Australian skipper Pat Cummins threw his wicket away with a crazy swipe across the stumps, Jadeja was bowled for a golden duck. Alex Carey and Nathan Lyon put on a 15-run stand for the ninth wicket before the Australian wicketkeeper missed a reverse sweep against Jadeja, handing the Indian tweaker his 21st Test five-wicket haul.

Lyon followed him to the pavilion after edging a full delivery back into the pegs for 8 to become Jadeja’s sixth victim of the innings. The left-armer finished the innings by dismissing debutant Matthew Kuhnemann for a duck, completing with a career-high 7-42. It was India’s finest Test bowling performance against Australia since 2004.
