New Zealand vs Bangladesh, 1st Test Day 2: Visitors Bangladesh took control of the first Test against New Zealand at Mount Maunganui on Sunday.

The hosts began the day in a good position, having scored 258-5 on Day 1. However, a wonderful spell of bowling from Bangladesh saw them claw their way back into the game.

To top things off, their batting stood firm in resistance to ensure no early collapses took place. The result? Bangladesh are 175-2 at stumps on Day 2, trailing only by 153 runs.

It puts them in a good position to take a commanding lead, especially given the wickets they have in hand. For New Zealand, however, it was a frustrating day – and one they’ll need to forget about quickly.

They started the day in a position to score a massive first innings total. Instead, they were bundled out on the cheap – then saw their seamers huff and puff in the face of some excellent batting by the visitors.

New Zealand unravel vs Bangladesh

The hosts had started the Test match. A century from Devon Conway and a Will Young half-century saw them end Day 1 at 258-5. However, they lost their next 5 wickets for just 70 runs.

Shoriful Islam drew first blood with a well-bowled ball. It angled into Rachin Ravindra, who edged one to Shadman Islam in the slips.

This saw Henry Nicholls and new man Kyle Jamieson launch a counter-attack of sorts. Nicholls in particular looked in fine touch, but ran out of partners at a quick rate.

Jamieson was the first to depart, going for a big shot off Mehidy Hasan but finding Shadman at long-on. Hasan would strike again a few overs later, this time removing Tim Southee.

The very next ball saw him snare Neil Wagner, although it took a review to confirm that he inside edged the ball onto his pads before Liton Das claimed the catch.

The final wicket fell when Mominul Islam removed Nicholls, with Shadman claiming a good catch at backward point to complete the dismissal.

Bangladesh end Day 2 strongly

Patience was always going to be key for Bangladesh in the first innings. And the opening duo of Mahmudul Hasan Joy and Shadman Islam provided it in spades.

It took an excellent caught-and-bowled from Neil Wagner to remove Shadman. But the dismissal of the opener brought in Najmul Hossain Shanto, who proceeded to stitch together a century stand with Joy.

Both brought up their half centuries but it Shanto fell to a well-laid trap from Wagner. The pacer peppered him with short balls before bowling one full, forcing the batsman to prod one to Will Young at gully.

Skipper Mominul Haque saw out the day alongside Joy with minimal fuss though, and the platform is now set for another big partnership on Day 3.
