In a rain-affected third T20I at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui, Mitchell Santner played a pivotal role in guiding New Zealand to level the series against Bangladesh. The all-rounder showcased exceptional skills with both bat and ball, claiming impressive figures of 4 for 16 in his four overs. Bangladesh, facing Santner’s bowling prowess, succumbed for a total of 110.

Early Wickets and Bangladesh’s Aggressive Start – New Zealand made early inroads into the Bangladesh batting lineup, with Tim Southee, Adam Milne, and Ben Sears each picking up a wicket in the PowerPlay. Despite a boundary-filled start, Bangladesh lost key wickets, including that of Najmul Hossain Shanto, but still managed to reach 45 runs at the end of the first six overs.

Spin Domination in the Middle Overs- Santner and Ish Sodhi, in tandem, applied a spin squeeze during the middle overs. They bowled six consecutive tight overs, conceding only 23 runs. While Sodhi created a dent in Bangladesh’s scoring, Santner reaped rewards by claiming two wickets in his final over. Bangladesh found themselves struggling at 87 for eight before entering the death overs.

New Zealand’s Batting Response – Facing early setbacks in their run chase, New Zealand lost wickets quickly, with Tim Seifert, Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips, and Mark Chapman each contributing just a run. However, opener Finn Allen kept the runs flowing. When Allen fell in the ninth over after scoring 38 runs, Bangladesh sensed an opportunity with five wickets down.

Neesham and Santner’s Resistance – James Neesham and Mitchell Santner played crucial roles in resisting Bangladesh’s resurgence. At 49/5, still trailing by eight runs on the DLS method, Neesham seized the initiative, scoring crucial boundaries. Despite tight bowling from Mustafizur Rahman, Santner’s boundary off Mahedi Hasan shifted the momentum back in favor of New Zealand. Rain interrupted play with New Zealand at 95/5 in 14.4 overs, securing a 17-run victory based on the DLS method.

Brief Scores:
Bangladesh 110 in 19.2 overs (Najmul Hossain Shanto 19, Towhid Hridoy 16; Mitchell Santner 4-16, Tim Southee 2-25) defeated Bangladesh 95/5 in 14.4 overs (Finn Allen 38, James Neesham 28; Mahedi Hasan 2-18, Shoriful Islam 2-17) by 17 runs (DLS Method).
