South African opener Janneman Malan has won the ICC Men’s Emerging Cricketer of the year award for his excellent run in the white-ball cricket, especially in the 50-over format. Malan deuted for the Proteas in 2019 but rose to prominence in 2021. The 25-year-old went on to play eight ODI’s and nine T20Is in the year, but it was the one day format where he showed his real potential. Meanwhile Pakistan’s Fatima Sana won the Emerging Cricketer of the year 2021 in women’s international cricket.

The ICC Emerging Cricketer of the year in men’s and women’s international cricket is awarded to the best overall performer who is under the age of 26 and has played a maximum of 5 Tests, 10 ODI’s and 5 T20I’s prior to the performance period which is between 1 January and 31 December 2021.

In 2021, Malan scored 715 runs in 17 international matches (8 ODI’s and 9 T20Is) at an average of 47.66 and a strike rate of 101.85. He started the year with the T20I series in Pakistan, followed by another ODI and T20I series against the same opponent at home. At the end of those two series, he had already displayed his potential with two excellent knocks of 70 and 55 in Centurion.

But his moment of brilliance arrived when he smashed 177 against Ireland in Dublin. It was the fourth-highest score by a South African in ODI’s . He also shared a record partnership of 225 runs for the opening wicket with Quinton de Kock. He followed that up with a knock of 121 against Sri Lanka in Colombo and thus ended the year on an excellent note

Commenting on receiving the honour Janneman Malan, said: “It is a privilege to be named the ICC Men’s Emerging Cricketer of the Year. I would like to thank my family, my support system, and my team for the opportunity. My favourite innings of the year came in Sri Lanka where I had to bat the full fifty overs, whilst I was cramping. It was personally a big innings for me to keep batting and fight through the pain and be in a position to help my team win the game.”

Fatima Sana scalped 24 wickets in 2021

24-year-old Pakistani pacer Fatima Sana had an impressive 2021 as well. She became a pivotal part of Pakistan’s ODI and T20I squad because of her all-round abilities. Apart from playing at home, Sana has also toured Bangladesh, West Indies, Zimbabwe and South Africa, and delivered impressive performances.

She scalped 24 wickets in the year and 18 of them came in 11 matches against West Indies. Apart from her bowling, she is a decent lower-order batter, having scored 28*, 22* and 17* against the likes of West Indies, South Africa and Zimbabwe respectively.
