Gujarat Titans (GT) won the 15th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) and with the successful conclusion of the campaign, the BCCI, and the cricket fraternity, now have shifted their focus toward the upcoming auction of the IPL media rights for the next five years as well. For the first time in the history of the cash-rich league, the media rights will be e-auctioned, beginning from June 12 as well. However, the process will be a tedious one and it can take several days before the winner of the bid is announced.

The ‘Invitation to Tender’ (“ITT”) was available to the bidders earlier this year on receipt of payment of INR 25,00,000 (Rupees Twenty-Five Lakhs Only) which was a non-refundable fee along with any applicable Goods and Services Tax as well. And, as per reports, at least ten companies have reportedly put their hats in the ring by paying the BCCI a non-refundable fee of 29.5 lakh rupees including GST as well.

When will the IPL media rights auction start?

The e-auction will start on June 12.

Companies to bid for the rights:

Disney-Star, Sony, Zee Entertainment, Amazon, Apple, Google, Sky Sports UK and South Africa’s SuperSport. Moreover, Amazon Prime Video has also started live-streaming cricket matches and the OTT major reportedly wants to win the IPL rights as well.

However, the IPL media rights for the next five years will be sold in four different categories and interested companies can bid separately for each as well.

The four categories are:

1) Television rights for the Indian subcontinent.

2) Digital rights.

3) Non-exclusive digital rights for a set of 18 matches, including the campaign opener, four playoffs and evening games of weekend double-headers as well.

4) Rest of the world.

BCCI’s earnings last time

The BCCI had sold the five-year rights (TV and digital) for IPL 2018 to 2022 to Star Sports India for Rs 16,347.50 crore. However, this time around, the board hopes to earn more than Rs 30000 crore. However, according to the reports, the BCCI has kept the base price at Rs 32,890 crore for the next five years. It will be a 100% increase from what Star-Disney used to pay them five years ago at Rs 16,347 crore as well. With the inclusion of two more teams in IPL 2022, the tournament has become bigger which means more matches, more engagement, and more revenue too as well.
