On the second day of the Indian Premier League mega auction on Sunday, February 13, 2022, Mumbai Indians made a huge signing and statement by purchasing England pacer Jofra Archer for Rs 8 crore. He will, however, be unable to play this season as he recovers from elbow surgery. Archer is recovering from surgery on his injured elbow for the second time. With a base price of Rs 2 crore, the 26-year-old has put himself in the top tier of potential recruits.

A bidding war erupted between Archer’s former club Rajasthan Royals and MI to sign the pacer, but RR pulled out after the bid reached Rs. 6.25 crore. Before MI took the prize, the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) joined the bidding. On Twitter, the England pacer responded to the bidding war with an eye-popping smiley.

Archer’s inclusion in the auction list was unexpected, with IPL chief operating officer Hemang Amin informing franchises that Archer had been registered primarily with a view to potential participation in 2023 and 2024, as due to his current injury, it is unlikely that he will be able to participate in IPL 2022.

“Therefore, his name has been included in the auction list but he won’t feature in the marquee or other sets to be presented,” Amin added. “He will be available to be called during the accelerated auction and whoever picks him up will ot get a replacement player for IPL 2022 season.”

In addition, Archer hasn’t played cricket in ten months and is still recovering from surgery. Despite this, Mumbai made the decision to sign the English cricketer for the next few years.

Day 2 of the auction

The IPL auction for the 2022 season got off to a slow start on the second day. Only three players were selected by franchises in the capped players category. Aiden Markram’s name was pulled from the bag first, and he piqued people’s interest. He was eventually sold for Rs 2.6 crore to Sunrisers Hyderabad. This raised expectations that the franchises would engage in a lot of back-and-forth bidding in the early hours of the day.

The IPL auction in 2022 is expected to be one of the largest in recent memory. This is because two new franchises have been added to the mix. Yes, the IPL has returned to a ten-team format. This isn’t the first time a concept like this has been tried; the league adopted a similar format in 2011. The two new teams, on the other hand, would quickly become mired in financial difficulties and fold. Lucknow Super Giants and Gujarat Titans, the two new teams for 2022, will hope to avoid a similar fate.
