The IPL accelerated auction began at the end of all the rounds of regular auction action. The round thus saw a number of players picked up in a quick manner.

It is a ploy used by teams to let players come back up in the accelerated part of the auction. This way, a player is less likely to spark a bidding war; thus this makes it easier for teams to buy a player.

This was indeed evident in the latter parts of the auction. A good number of players got just the one bid and were then sold. This did not just happen with uncapped players; a number of big name players were also bought in this very way.

Of course, that does not mean there were no bidding wars. Jofra Archer was signed by Mumbai Indians for 8 crore and he was thus pursued by many teams.

Another player who went big was Romario Shepherd; the big West Indian also sparked a bidding war. He would eventually be signed by Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Also caught up in a big bidding war was Tim David. The Singapore player is seen as a specialist in this format; thus, he was pursued by many. But he too was signed by Mumbai.

Another who also went for a decent sum was Rovman Powell. And there was also Daniel Sams, who was signed by Mumbai.

Yet another West Indian who went for big money was Alzarri Joseph. The young pacer was pursued by former side Mumbai Indians, but was then signed by Gujarat Titans.

But one of the shocks of the round was when Vaibhav Arora was signed for 2 crore by Punjab Kings. KKR wanted him on the cheap but Punjab outbid them in the end. Thus to say this was a shock would be an understatement.

Auction goes mega

The 2022 edition of the IPL auction is set to be one of the biggest in recent memory. This is because of the addition of two new franchises into the fold.

Yes, the IPL is now back to being a 10-team tournament. This is not the first time such a concept has been trialled; the league switched to a similar format back in 2011 too.

However, the two new teams would get caught up in financial issues and fold soon enough. The two new teams for 2022, Lucknow Super Giants and Gujarat Titans, will hope to avoid a similar fate.

As things stand, both new teams have made some interesting signings before the auction. Gujarat will be captained by Hardik Pandya, and the team also has Afghanistan all-rounder Rashid Khan and Indian batsman Shubman Gill in their ranks.

Lucknow, on the other hand, have signed KL Rahul as their skipper along with Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis and uncapped Indian spinner Ravi Bishnoi.
