Chennai Super Kings will kick-off the IPL 2022 tournament by playing Kolkata Knight Riders in the opening match in what will be a repeat of 2021 final.
The IPL 2022 Schedule was finally announced on Sunday. The tournament will begin on March 26 with the Chennai Super Kings taking on Kolkata Knight Riders in the opening game of the tournament. The match will be a repeat of the 2021 IPL final, which saw Chennai Super Kings beat Kolkata Knight Riders to clinch their fourth title. Under the captaincy of MS Dhoni, Chennai Super Kings would be aiming to get their fifth IPL title in the 2022 edition of the tournament.
Kolkata Knight Riders, on the other hand, would be ruing their missed opportunity in IPL 2021. However, in the IPL 2022 Mega Auction, Kolkata Knight Riders made some new decisions. Shreyas Iyer was picked for Rs 12.25 crore and he will be the new captain of the Kolkata Knight Riders. The likes of Pat Cummins and Tim Southee will be a great addition to their bowling. The likes of Sunil Narine, Varun Chakravarthy, and Venkatesh Iyer will add depth to the squad.
The IPL 2022 Schedule will see matches being played predominantly in Mumbai and Pune. The Wankhede stadium, Brabourne Stadium, and the DY Patil Ground in Navi Mumbai will host the matches in the IPL 2022. The DY Patil Stadium last hosted IPL games in 2011 but since then, the ground has not been used for any kind of international matches. Apart from the stadiums in Mumbai, there will be matches held at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune.

The logistics of this arrangement in IPL 2022 is the lessons that the IPL Governing Council and BCCI learned in the aftermath of the 2021 season. In that edition, maintaining multiple IPL bio-bubbles in separate cities led to huge logistical issues. The bio-bubbles in Ahmedabad and Delhi were breached, which saw the tournament being suspended. The IPL 2021 resumed in the UAE and Chennai Super Kings won the tournament.
IPL 2022 will see a total of 10 teams, with two virtual groups. Teams that are clubbed in the same group will play each other twice. They will play only one match against teams in the other group. However, if they are in the same row, then one team will play the other team twice. Thus, Chennai Super Kings will play Mumbai Indians twice. The IPL 2022 match against Kolkata Knight Riders will be their only league encounter in this edition.
