Off the back of an incredible opening partnership, the Delhi Capitals (DC) managed to reach a score of 164-5 in the first innings against the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the 2021 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Friday. Openers Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw constructed an incredible stand of 88 runs for the first wicket. Dhawan, who is one of the leading run-scorers of the IPL so far, made 43 runs while Shaw missed out on his half-century, scoring 48 runs. West Indian batter Shimron Hetmyer finished things off for the men in blue in the first innings with a highly useful cameo of 29 runs.

OUTSTANDING OPENING PARTNERSHIP

Rishabh Pant will be quite happy as a skipper when he looks at the batting card for the Capitals on the day. The middle-order might not have scored many runs but they did enough to ensure that the team reached a fighting total. Dhawan scored 43 runs off just 35 deliveries while his opening partner Shaw made 48 off just 31 balls. Shaw’s innings comprised four boundaries and a couple of maximums while Dhawan smashed three fours and two sixes.

Skipper Pant did not have a good time with the bat on the day as he scored 10 runs off eight deliveries. Former skipper Shreyas Iyer played a handy knock for the Capitals as he scored 18 runs off 18 deliveries. The rate of scoring might not have been quick but the runs are valuable nonetheless. Hetmyer was the one who finished things off as he played a fine cameo of 29 runs off just 22 deliveries in a knock that included two boundaries and two maximums. Ripal Patel remained unbeaten on seven.

SIRAJ TAKES TWO

The pick of the bowlers for Virat Kohli’s men on the day was pacer Mohammad Siraj. He picked a couple of wickets in four overs and conceded only 24 runs. No one apart from him had a memorable performance as the DC batters smashed them around the park. However, Yuzvendra Chahal, Harshal Patel, and Dan Christian also chipped in as they picked one wicket each.
