Australian players, commentators, coaches and support staff involved in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 will depart for Maldives, according to an ESPNCricinfo report. The reason for heading to Maldives is the current border closure that Australia has with India. The reason for the border closure – set to last till May 15 – is India’s severe coronavirus outbreak. India is in the midst of a second wave that is even deadlier than the first. The country have registered over 300,000 new cases for the past week.

IPL 2021 has not been safe from the pandemic either. Two players in the Kolkata Knight Riders squad – Varun Chakravarthy and Sandeep Warrier – tested positive on Monday. This saw the side’s game against Chennai Super Kings postponed.

However, positive tests in the Delhi Capitals and Sunrisers Hyderabad camps meant the tournament got indefinitely suspended.

It reamins to be seen when the BCCI completes the tournament.

CA, ACA statements on IPL 2021

Cricket Australia (CA) and the Australian Cricketers Association (ACA) released a statement on the situation. However, proper solutions were not forthcoming in their words.

“Cricket Australia and the Australian Cricketers’ Association understand the decision of the BCCI to indefinitely postpone the 2021 Indian Premier League for the safety and wellbeing of all participants,” a joint statement from CA and ACA said.

“CA is in direct contact with the BCCI as they work through plans to ensure the safe accommodation and repatriation of Australian players, coaches, match officials and commentators back home to Australia.”

The statement also said that they respect the Australian government guidelines and thank the BCCI’s efforts to send players home.

“CA and the ACA respect the decision of the Australian Government to pause travel from India until at least May 15 and will not seek exemptions.

“CA and the ACA thank the BCCI for their efforts and cooperation for the safe repatriation of all participants at the IPL.”

Former Australia cricketer and current commentator had already left for Maldives. He also criticised the travel ban placed on Australian citizens on Twitter.
